			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Dr. Robert Atkins is the creator of the most popular low-carb nutritional approach better known as the Atkins diet. It came to the public&#8217;s attention back in the early 70s and it has been regarded ever since as one of the best weight loss options. Dr. Atkins&#8217; scientific studies and metabolic theories laid the basis for the New Diet Revolution. To describe it in very brief lines, the Atkins diet is a restrictive weight loss approach that aims at reducing the blood sugar level by eliminating carbohydrates from the daily diet. It is of paramount importance to use whole unprocessed foods to support the program.</p>
<p>Contrary to other weight loss diets that recommend low glycemic carbohydrates like vegetables and black rice, the Atkins diet is strict with these too. The Atkins diet is supported by Atkins Nutritionals, a company that markets the foods allowed in the program. There are four phases corresponding to this approach: induction, ongoing <a href="http://www.dietinginsights.com" target=_self>Weight Loss</a>, pre-maintenance and lifetime maintenance.</p>
<p>INDUCTION lasts or two weeks and it is the most restrictive phase of the entire Atkins diet. During this period your daily carbohydrate intake will not be higher than 20 net grams. Tomatoes, asparagus, spinach, pumpkin and 54 other vegetables can be used successfully during this phase. Legumes like green beans are not allowed.</p>
<p>You can also eat fish, fowl, eggs, cheddar cheese, olive oil and butter. You should drink at least 8 glasses of water per day during the induction phase.</p>
<p>During the ONGOING WEIGHT LOSS phase of the Atkins diet, the carb intake will increase with 5 net grams per week. Dr. Atkins has created a carbohydrate ladder for this phase and you should carefully check it to adapt your meals to it.</p>
<p>PRE-MAINTENANCE adds 10 net grams per week, and up to this level, there are no risks of putting on weight.</p>
<p>LIFETIME MAINTENANCE carries on with the eating habits that you&#8217;ve developed during the first phases of the Atkins diet. If you focus on unprocessed foods, health and fitness benefits remain permanent.</p>
<p>There is both praise and criticism of the Atkins diet, and the risks and benefits are not as clear as we&#8217;d like them to be. It is not sure whether the health benefits are as high as emphasized by some program promoters. Studies are not conclusive here, meaning that experts have not reached a conclusion, due to the contradicting data available. Carefully analyze the pros and cons as well as the specifics of the Atkins diet before taking it up.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://i.ytimg.com/vi/Nw6UAG5EvrE/2.jpg" align="left">In this long Quick Hits video, I discuss whether kids or teenagers (as my daughter oft reminds me) should follow the Atkins Diet as prescribed or a more moderate low carb or carb conscious plan.</p>
<p>I respond by saying that for most teenagers a lower carb approach is probably best, especially not if the choice is not driven by the child themselves.  I believe as parents we are called to teach our kids a healthy way of eating, and while acknowledging kids&#8217; environment and choices, we should make and help them choose to eat wisely, which by almost any standard should not include &#8220;whites&#8221; &#8211; refined starches and sugars.  There should be no requirement for breading or donuts to be healthy or happy.  The challenge with kids and teenagers is therefore school lunch programs and their unhealthy nature. </p>
<p>This is by no means a discouragement for teenagers, who may want to try Atkins Diet due to an internal desire to lose weight.  I just want them to be aware of what their decision means.</p>

<p>My criteria for a good low carb breakfast is:<br />

* has to be easy to make<br />
* has to provide enough nutrition for morning activities and mid day exercise</p>
<p>I also suggest the valuable step of prepping for breakfast the night or the week before by chopping the vegetables or cooking the meat beforehand to expand your options.  With that in mind, there are countless options for the 5-minute or less breakfast meals.</p>
<p>I highlight my favorite 5:<br />
* Taco or Fajita Salad<br />
* Low Carb Stir Fry<br />
* Sausage Broccoli Quiche<br />
* Upside Down Low Carb Pizza<br />
* Pancakes and Syrup</p>

1/2 cup unsalted butter<br />
1/2 cup Natural Peanut Butter<br />
2 ounces softened cream cheese<br />
1 cup Splenda<br />
2/3 cup Vanilla Whey protein powder</p>
<p>* Microwave the butter and peanut butter on HIGH for 1 minutes; mix thoroughly.<br />
* Mix in the cream chees<br />
* Add the Splenda and the whey protein powder until well combined.<br />
* Line a 8 x 8&#8243; baking pan with nonstick foil. Spread the fudge and press out with another nonstick piece of foil or plastic wrap.<br />
* Chill for one hour. </p>
<p>Makes around 20 pieces.<br />
Nutritional Info:<br />
Per Piece &#8211; 95.7 Calories, 8.55g of Fat (4g Sat), 3.5g of Protein, 2.3g Carbs (1.9g Net Carbs)</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://i.ytimg.com/vi/ExEc9j_GJ5Y/2.jpg" align="left">In this cooking video, I detail how to make one of my staples of the diet &#8212; low carb fried chicken. You don&#8217;t have to give up the joy of fried chicken, and contrary to <a href="http://www.dietinginsights.com" target=_self>Low Fat Diet</a>s, you can eat the skin too!  I have fried chicken at least once a week almost.  Chicken has a great amount of protein as well as delicious fat in the skin.  I display 2 of the 3 methods that are among the acceptable coatings for chicken or chicken-fried foods (like Country Fried Steaks):</p>
<p>* Parmesan Cheese &#8211; Induction friendly<br />
* Carbquik breading<br />
* Crushed Pork Rinds. ** not shown  Just run the pork rinds through a food processor to crush the  rinds into smaller pieces.  You would be surprised by how tasty this is, and how little pork rinds flavor there is remaining.  I had intended to show this method as well, but Wal-mart wasn&#8217;t selling them anymore.  </p>
<p>Here is the recipe for the breading:<br />
* 1 cup of Carbquik flour<br />
* 2 TBS Paprika<br />
* 1 TBS Black Pepper<br />
* Dashes of Cayenne Pepper, Chili Pepper, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Poultry Seasoning</p>

* 1/4 cup Atkins Bake Mix *recipe below<br />
* 1/2 tsp baking powder<br />
* 1/2 tsp vanilla<br />
* 1/4 cup Heavy Cream or buttermilk </p>
<p>Beat cream cheese with mixer until blended smooth.  Add the remaining ingredients, and let sit for 5 minutes.   Preheat non-stick pan to med/high heat.   Spray pan with non stick spray and use 1/4 cup measure per pancake.   Yield 10 pancakes.</p>
