Healthy Eating for the Whole Family

Dieting is not just about weight loss, there is much more involved. Conventional wisdom tells us that as much as people diet to lose weight, the only way to ensure adequate nutrition and all over fitness is to completely change our dietary habits. Traditionally, dieting has been centered on adopting a specialized meal plan until such time as the needed weight is lost. Modern views of Dieting tend to focus more on adopting a new way of viewing food and changing our lifestyle to reflect a healthy, balanced and satisfying way of eating. The benefits of a healthy diet can be experienced by the whole family. Rather than starting a new fad diet, start changing the way your family eats.

Introducing a Healthy Diet
Once a meal pattern has been developed, it is sometimes hard to break away from the unhealthy habits that have been set. Removing excessive junk food, salt, fat and other harmful ingredients is a smart plan, but can cause a lot of complaints if your family is not ready to go cold turkey. Introducing healthy meals and habits will be more affective if it is done gradually. It is important to remember that a nutritional diet does not need to be devoid of taste or variety. If you are looking to change the way your family eats in a way that does not create a mass revolt, try some of the following suggestions:

Delegate Menu Planning. Try asking your family if they would be willing to eat the healthy meals you prepare 4 nights a week, if they can plan the menu on the other 3 days. As you introduce some healthy alternatives, your family wont feel starved for old favorites.

Be Willing to Compromise. If your family does not want to give up soda, for example, make a deal that soda is for weekends only, or only with certain meals. Be open to understanding that healthy habits need to be embraced, not forced.

Provide Alternative Snacks. Half the problem with snacking is that kids will eat whatever requires the least amount of work. Keeping cut vegetables, rice cakes and sugar-free beverages available can encourage your family to develop healthier snack habits.

The Benefits of Health Eating Habits
Establishing good nutritional habits now can have long term positive affects on your familys overall health. Along with weight control, Healthy Eating will give your family more energy on a daily basis and can reduce the opportunities for future health problems with high cholesterol, blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases. Making smart decisions about what to eat is a valuable lesson for people of any age.
